I have to admit to being surprised reading this book. I know that Lawrence Durrell is a well-known English literature writer from the s and so I expected to find this book hard to read. Instead I found it quite easy to read. It is an interesting version of the history of Cyprus at the start of its troubles prior to becoming independent/5(16). I am a huge fan of Lawrence Durrell so was glad to get this copy of Bitter Lemons to replace one that has wandered off in the past fifty years. While this is not as lyrical a book as Prospero's Cell or even some of his fiction, it is an interesting reminder of the pains of war and political disputes on the ordinary people of an occupied 4/4(35).
